Roland, this is very informative - thank you. Given the scheme is almost definitely going to go ahead, even if it fails to address the Mogden problem, there is every potential here for councils to start fighting each other to get the main construction sites moved off their patch. One of the problems with Barn Elms is that it ia on the far edge of Richmond borough (from their perspective) yet not in Wandsworth, whose residents arguably will be even more affected if the current proposal goes ahead. So I doubt we would get much change out of Richmond council to move the site to Old Deer Park, for example. There does seem to be "brownfield" space in Hammersmith but probably not enough of it for Thames Water's requirements. And they would still need the wharf jutting out into the river. It would just be further upstream - out of sight perhaps but just as disruptive to river flow and the rowing community. Whichever way you look at this there are unpalatable options. I wonder if we can't prevail on the well-heeled members of the Hurlingham Club to offer their grounds?? |
