Have a look at the consultation papers on their website. They are well hidden but do contains maps of the river where a main shaft site could be built. The Middlesex or North Bank East of Hammersmith Bridge was where there used to be many wharves for the loading and unloading of barges many years ago. Remnents of these wharves still exist. Due to the curve in the river, reconstructing these wharves for Thames Tunnel material would be simple and not impede navigation. The large construction site at Chancellors wharf where Thames Water are already planning to build a small tunnel connecting site can be enlarged to include the main shaft site. This is brown field industrial wasteland with river access and would have nowhere near the enviromental impact of digging up Barn Elms and filling the roads with lorrys. |
