I wasn't around to go to the Putney presentation, and am only just exploring the tunnel website. My initial reaction is that Putney is already subject to intolerable traffic congestion. Putney Hill, Putney High St, Putney Bridge are clogged with through traffic from elsewhere. You can sit on a bus for a good ten minustes going down the High St. How much more traffic can the road network absorb? Those of us affected by the Upper Richmond Rd gasworks are experiencing disruption - and for local shops and businesses it is especially difficult. But irritating though this is, it is scheduled to last for only a few months. Seven years for the tunnel works is utterly different. Does this mean that the Thames towpath will be out of bounds to walkers for seven years? Will the river area be a building site for seven years? My heart just sinks at the thought of it. Don't we have enough to put up with with the wretched planes? |
