Without us all going to and fro over who said what to who and when etc, etc, surely the main and depressing fact is that Mandelson was even considered for the job under any circumstances.

Has the country reached a point where someone like him, with an appalling political and financial history and a penchant for sharing in the lavish life of a paedophile, is even considered  for such an important role ?

Let's face it Blair sacked him three times over such issues.

Yet like a leech he seems so difficult to shake off.

Were there really no better candidates ?

If so the UK really is in a desperately bad shape.

Starmer is rightly getting a bad press for being behind all of this mess.

Everyone can see there was no justification for him appointing Mandelson to the role and if nothing else it just shows appalling bad political and personal judgement.

(Unless Mandelson knows something else about Starmer's private or political life that has not been exposed yet).

Yet with all the word play, obfuscation and gaslighting that are the tools of his barrister trade, Starmer tries to wriggle away from accepting any responsibility for the decision and blames it on information provided by others.

Here Civil Servants accused of being inadequate briefing solicitors.

Who thought fixed term Parliaments were a good idea !
