| As regards 3), Robert, it seems that in (virtually) all other departments of state, the vetting committee's decision is final. It is only the Foreign Office which has (or had) the option of regarding the vetting committee as advisory, while coming to their own decision. So why is it that for an appointment in , say, the Home Office the vetting commitee can present its conclusion without breaking confidentiality, but in the case of the Foreign Ofice revealing the conclusion of the advice (without revealing the details) would break confidentiality? I just don't think Olly Robbins' argument on this issue is tenable. And Jack Strsw, who actually introduced the legislation in 2010 making vetting confidential and independent of government, has confirmed that there is no reason why the vetting committee's conclusions should not be conveyed to the government. Indeed, he said, it would be bizarre if the government were not allowed to know the conclusion of a vetting process (whether final or merely advisory). Otherwise what would be the point of vetting in the first place? |
