| I agree with you on both counts, Jonathan. I think Starmer will ride out this scandal for the moment, though things may change after the local elections. I also agree that Olly Robbins probably took the decision to reverse the vetting decision so as not to embarrass Starmer who had already announced Mandelson’s appointment. Robbins was undoubtedly aware of the risks associated with Mandelson but along with other Foreign Office officials took the view that the risk was manageable. What I cannot understand is that he thought it was part of his job to keep silent about the vetting decision and allow the Prime Minister to make misleading statements to Parliament. The same applies to Antonia Romeo, the Cabinet Secretary, and Catherine Little, the Cabinet Office Permanent Secretary, who found out about the vetting back in March but kept it secret from the Prime Minister while they debated along with other civil servants whether the whole debacle should be covered up. Is there something about an Oxford education and a fast track career in the civil service which causes these individuals to think they are more important than Parliamentarians? |
