Michael, I am puzzled by your reply to Robert. When has Robert ever argued against the principle of free speech?

Sue, the problem for defenders of Olly Robbins is that Robbins appeared before a Commons committee and failed to mention when asked that Mandelson had failed his security vetting. Personally I find it hard to believe that a Foreign Office official would take it upon himself to overrule the security services for such an important post without first consulting Number 10, but even if he had the power to do so there is no excuse for misleading the Commons committee about his actions. So I think it is quite right that Robbins was sacked and I wonder how many other top officials in the Foreign Office were complicit in the conspiracy of silence. But whatever the culpability of civil servants in this matter, that still does not exonerate Keir Starmer who at best has been absurdly incompetent and possibly something worse.
