My own experience of consultants in the City was not positive. It was generally greeted with relish when we heard that a competitor had called in the consultants, usually either Bain or McKinsey. We reckoned they’d be out of the market for st least a year!

When my own firm called them in it was sometimes just to get them to confirm what the boss who’d hired them wanted support for. Usually to resolve some internal war.

I had to work with a few of them on one occasion and, surprise surprise, I knew more about my business and the market environment than they did. So we were paying them to learn about our business and then tell us how we were getting it wrong.

I often thought I was working for the wrong firm given how much we paid these guys, but I never went over to the dark side and actually joined them.

They weren’t all Oxbridge though, some were Harvard or Yale. Marvellous!
