Steven, interesting, so people leave the lowest paid jobs to avoid welfare top ups. Are you saying those jobs aren't needed? Surely, it's likelyothers will take those positions and need welfare top ups. Please explain the logic in yourstatement?

Philippa points out that one of the biggest DWP cost is pensioners, yet the UK state pension is one of (if not the) worst in Europe.  This isn’t a recent issue, it was the case for the last decade. Anyway, are state pensions really "welfae" for those of us who've paid NI and taxes for over forty five years (ok I know it doesn't quite work like that).

I note that BlackRock CEO Larry Fink has acknowledged that the current model of global capitalism is "fracturing" and not working for enough people, focusing wealth within a narrow minority.

Perhaps he's correct: the issue is that an adjustment in capitalism is needed to ensure a bigger slice of the cake for those at the bottom? (Given Marie Antoinette's use of the word cake may not be the best word.)

A financial adviser I was talking to a while ago thought rather than increase NI it would have been better to increase income taxes, at least at the higher rate. It would have caused squeals about "broken promises" but I think I'd agree with him it would have been less damaging- in a number of ways!
