Hello Richard,

I agree with you that Starmer has not lied, at least, in this instance.  However, "Starmer lied" is a very catchy chorus line.

There was a very interesting article on the BBC (I know, the BBC is hated by those who love chorus lines) which explains the reasons for choosing Mandelson.  Paragraphs 13 to 15 state:

"... The new president may be erratic and impulsive yet No 10 officials are determined the two leaders will develop a strong relationship despite their differing personalities.

"The PM will be asking Peter: 'How on earth do I handle this crazy guy?'," says a former colleague.

"As an ambassador in the court of Donald Trump you need someone who can tickle him under his chin. Peter will be the absolute fixer and bridge builder." ....

As for sacking the underling, that always happens as they are "easy prey", meaning civil servants do not have an electorate to answer to. 

I still cannot understand how David Lammy's name has not been mentioned as he was Foreign Secretary at the time.  He must have known that the vetting had failed.  He has not been requested to answer questions.  Very odd.  Needless to say, his silence on this matter says it all?

I hope Starmer does not go because I totally agree with his stance on the Iraq war.  I do not believe our chaps should go to fight a war started by Trump and Netanyahu single handedly and with no consultation or warning.
