| I think we are all agreed that Starmer is largely to blame for the whole debacle - for choosing Mandelson in the first place despite his dodgy reputation, for announcing his appointment before vetting had taken place, and, after the lurid details of Mandelson’s relationship with Epstein emerged, for failing to question why Mandelson had apparently passed the vetting procedure. However Robbins’ failure to inform Starmer that he had overruled the vetting committee’s decision, causing Starmer to make a misleading statement to Parliament, was not just a mistake but a sackable offence. The defence now offered by Robbins’ friends that he was only obeying the law in failing to inform Starmer what he had done is disingenuous. Jack Straw, who actually introduced the legislation in 2010 making vetting independent of government, has confirmed that nothing in the legislation prevents civil servants from relaying the fact (if not the details) of a successful or failed vetting procedure to the government of the day. Indeed it would be bizarre if the government were not informed of any decision. |
