Making sure that school education is working for ALL children is the most important start for doing all of that.  It isn't working for all of them.  Yesterday I re-read an article in the British Dyslexia Association Yearbook of 2002 regarding identifying primary school children with dyslexia.  It had this stand out and rather poignant note printed at the end of it: 

"(Note: Two copies of this, laminated, have been sent to every state primary school in England)

N.B.  This checklist can be downloaded from the BDA website."   

I notice today that it still seems to be on their website all these years later and teachers still don't seem to be taught how to teach in a more inclusive and multisensory way so as to actually engage, enthuse and include that 10% of the population who struggle more right at the very beginning of their education.  A struggle which can lead to bad behaviour, truancy and family breakdown as parents struggle to both work and get their children to school and keep them on the straight and narrow.

Just take a look at the number of people in prison right now who have literacy problems!  Also look at how cuts to education and skills training in prison are making it even harder for those leaving prison to get a better job and avoid returning there.  (There's a huge amount of re-offending.)
