Harriet, that comes from a report produced this week by Will Hutton for the Government. There is no indication that I know of about how the Government intends to respond. Suzanne, I don't mean, though it may have looked like it, that we should control every salary in the private sector but I do think that IF it is within national political interest what might be a minimum wage, or who might be acceptable labour (i.e. not necessarily accept endless numbers of cheap foreign labour) then perhaps we should also have a view about an acceptable maximum. I also do not really believe as you do in this rigid division between private and public sector - there is not a private sector business which does not depend almost totally on the public sector for its workforces' education, for transport infrastucture, for public health and public order, etc. As for political parties forgetting their differences and working together for the common good! What do you think we are in this for? Don't you recognise that Labour and Tories politicians disagree with each other not just for fun but because we disagree about how to do the best for the community. We are not simply in a football match, where it doesn't really matter who wins except to the fans. Why don't we simply merge the French and the British navies and armies? It would make for a much more effective and cheaper military capability. Well funnily enough Labour Lambeth and Tory Wandsworth probably feel the same about merging service delivery. Services might not be as important as the military but nor are the costs on the same scale! |
