With the greatest of respects, as they say, it is not me dragging wider issues into the beef about WBC pay and pension rates. My position on it has been consistent and coherent, right or wrong, for years. As for the issues, yes the forum does provide a platform but not a very deliverable constituency - and that is the problem for councillors. Take the last few years. Two of the biggest controversies in the Putney area have been the sale of a nursery and its use for residential development and the closure of Wandsworth Museum, as was. On both issues the Council was massively unpopular - did it make a discernible difference in the local election results in May? Not that I could see. So whilst I contribute because I find it interesting, even worthwhile, it will be difficult to persuade others to unless you can hit them where it hurts - the ballot box. |
