Tony Belton, WBC's inconsistent and contrary view on salaries for senior management and its lowest paid workers is an instance of the deceptive but prevailing business orthodoxy originally highlighted by the outstanding economist, the late J K Galbraith. That is the rich and powerful (council execs.) are deemed only to work harder if you incent them with massive salaries/bonuses and, through low taxes, maximise what they can accumulate. However, the poorer 'lower orders' (home helps) will only work hard if you minimise their income (remember the Tories arguments against the minimum wage) and reduce their benefits, forcing them to strive the harder simply to make ends meet. Refering back to the original issue of WBC executive salaries, I read in the Government sponsored 'Fair Pay Review' by Will Hutton that the average salary of a Local Authority Chief Executive is £117,523 pa. and for a Principle of an FE College, £110,700 pa. WBC has 8 executives earning at least £60,000 pa (6 home helps ?) more than the CEO average (including a Director of Leisure and Amenity Services !!) and 2 SCHOOL headteachers earning at least £70,000 pa. (3 teachers ?) more than the FE average. Will the Council address this issue before Mr Pickles comes to call ? |
