You wanted a reply from an elected member - so here is my response as the Leader of the Labour councillors. Yes, these salaries have been opposed in committee and in Council for year after year by me and my Labour colleagues. If you look back to the March Budget making Council, which of course took place prior to both the General and the Council Election, you will see an amendment moved by me asking for cuts in top salaries. I have always opposed the ludicrously high bonuses for senior staff and voted against the individual salaries agreed for new appointments, including the new Chief Executive. My only surprise at this correspondence is, however, the comments made by some about the private sector. As far as the Banks are concerned, and many other parts of the private sector (BP), both the competence levels and the pensions, at the senior level, hardly bear comparison with the first being lower and the second higher than anything in the public sector. |
