Interesting comments made on Newsnight concerning enormous executive salaries in local Government. Grant Shapps, Conservative Minister for Housing and Planning, declared that in these austere times, when council staff are being sacked or taking pay freezes, very high earning Council Executives should TAKE A PAY CUT, just as have Government Ministers to really show 'we are all in this together'. Phillip Blond, founder of the Conservative think-tank ResPublica, made two interesting points. 1)There is no empirical evidence that high executive salaries have any lasting relationship to the performance of the institutions these people manage, especially in local Government where they are rarely sacked or tempted into the more competitive private sector. 2)In the 'big society' there should be voter representation on the renumeration boards of councils. So, Conservative councillors, what about putting Conservative policy into action ? |
