Perhaps more people should understand the way that the area was carved up by the French and British. I agree with Caroline in her post above that the programme The Mandates has been interesting. It can be found here: https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m001r1h6 Circumstances changed from the initial offer when only 5 to 10% of the population was Jewish and there were many other religions but then vast numbers of refugees and economic migrants started to arrive. There were large camps of Jewish refugees and economic migrants held in Cyprus in camps. Palestine was not an empty and unlived in country and there was also Israeli terrorism which is why when it became difficult for them many Palestinians fled but still held and hold the keys of their homes in the hope that they can one day return - just as most refugees fleeing their home country wherever it is still wish to do. There are good articles in Haaretz which are interesting and give different viewpoints as just as Hamas is not supported by many Palestinians neither are the actions of the Israeli Govt by many Israelis. I believe Golda Meir resigned after criticism following the Yom Kippur war. https://israeled.org/golda-meir-resigns-prime-minister/ Violence breeds violence and the blanket bombing of so many civilians is believed to be increasing sympathy for Palestinians. Isn't this a lesson we learned or should have done from elsewhere in the Middle East? |
