I don't think it is right to imply that those who believe that Israel is entitled to remove the threat posed by Hamas are therefore indifferent to the suffering in Gaza. The situation is tragic, but a unilateral cessation of hostilities by Israel is not a solution. It is easy from the safety of Putney to claim that Hamas does not have the capacity to carry out its threat to exterminate the Jewish population of Israel. Is Israel supposed to wait until Hamas is powerful enough to carry out an even more devastating attack than the one perpetrated on October 7? There are several parallels between Hamas and the Nazis. Like the Nazis, Hamas were elected to power, after which they ditched all forms of democracy. Like the Nazis, Hamas have maintained control through a a policy of intimidation and indoctrination of the population. And like the Nazis, they advocate genocide. The only difference between Britain in the Second World War and Israel now is that the Nazis did not threaten to exterminate the entire British population, whereas Hamas' stated aim is to kill every last Jew. During the war did anyone in Britain claim that Nazism is an idea which cannot be eliminated by force of arms, or that by pursuing the war Britain was alienating the German population, or express outrage that German civilians were dying as a result of bombing raids on military and industrial targets? Yet these arguments are deployed against Israel. Why is that? |
