Hamas has no authority to fight for the rights of Palestinians on the West Bank, a territory governed by Fatah whose leaders In Gaza were murdered by Hamas in 2007 after the Israelis withdrew. The figure of 17000 Palestinian dead, given by Al Jazeera, can only have come from Hamas, hardly an impartial source. Furthermore this figure makes no distinction between civilians and Hamas fighters, some of whom may have been responsible for the atrocity on October 7. It is easy enough from the safety of Putney to blame both sides equally for the number of dead. But what country can tolerate the existence across its border of a terrorist organisation dedicated to the extermination of its people? Those calling for an immediate ceasefire would effectively allow Gaza to remain under the control of Hamas, ready to regroup and repeat its monstrous attack. It is tragic that Israel’s pursuit of Hamas has resulted in the death of many innocent civilians, used by Hamas as a human shield. But what other choice does Israel have? During the Second World War, when Britain was faced with the menace of the Nazis, I don’t think there were many calls for a ceasefire so as to avoid further German casualties. Why is Israel being treated according to a different standard? |
