| I put considerable pressure on the MPS to issue FPNs (Fixed Penalty Notices) when it became clear that cyclists were ignoring the 'No Entry' signs on the Upper Richmond Road and were either cycling contrary to the flow of traffic or on the pavement. Eventually, and it has to be said rather reluctantly, they did so and over 20 FPNs were issued. In this I had the support of Dick Tracey, our Assembly Member and a member of the Metropolitan Police Authority, who took the matter up with the Borough Commander. I shall be monitoring closely the other road works scheduled for the Upper Richmond Road when they begin, both of which touch on East Putney ward which I represent. I am admittedly an occasional cyclist myself. What I cannot accept is the attitude of a small number of cyclists who feel that they should have prioity over pedestrians, even when walking lawfully on the pavement, who cycle regardless of the danger caused to them in a dangerous and anti-social way. I shall discuss the problem of the bridge with the East Putney and Thamesfield SNTs who have joint responsibility for its policing. Cllr Leslie McDonnell EastPutney Ward |
