| John In partial defence of TfL, a yellow diversion sign was put up at the intersection of the URR and Keswick Road on the afternoon of Wednesday, 28 October, inviting cyclists to turn right into Woodlands Way, thence west along Fawe Park Road and Disraeli Road; but it has to be said that this was a bit late in the day, and does indeed reflect an inadequate appreciation of cyclists’ needs by the powers that be. So many of us are people who cycle these days, and it is disappointing that perhaps those who make plans for contingencies such as this apparently are not cyclists themselves. We have got another 8 months ahead of us with more major gas works, and hopefully TfL will plan the post-Christmas work better than the present stage. It is a thoroughly unenviable task for the local police, who are doing their very best. By chance, I was standing beside the yellow sign referred to above with one of our PCSOs the Thursday after it went up. Within 2 minutes, 2 cyclists had gone straight through the no entry signs heading west along the URR. What would have been the point of blowing a whistle? The yellow sign did have some impact on the overall volume of cyclists misbehaving, although ominously some of these cyclists moved away from the narrow pavement, where they were a menace to pedestrians, and on to the roadway, against the prevailing flow of traffic. More information needs to be given out by TfL in the future, perhaps with signs much further away, in central Wandsworth perhaps. Furthermore, the people who misbehave at weekends are most likely to be leisure cyclists heading to Richmond Park, an entirely different group to the weekday commuters. |
