Why stop short with such feeble punishments, Ian, why not advocate shooting them on sight? More seriously, do you really think it appropriate that, to take just one example, a woman who slept through the riots but was jailed for handling a stolen pair of shorts that had been looted by a friend should have been sent to prison for five months? What happened to proportionality? As for Wandsworth's grandstanding over the eviction of the family of a youth who was accused of taking part in the riots, that'll keep him off the streets, won't it? Except that the streets were where he would end up as a result of the eviction.... Stop press: have just seen that the woman I mentioned who was jailed, has been freed on appeal. So at least one judge has retained his sanity. |
