True Simon. The decision not to build additional prison accomodation may lay behind that. Suprisingly, I haven't heard of anyone being charged with affray. That can carry a life sentence. My impression so far is that many of those who have been sentenced were "easy" targets; e.g. the 12 year old girl yesterday. Far easier to catch than a fit young man. A 14 year old boy with a bottle of wine. Bet he took some courage to apprehend. A ballet student. 'nuff said. What is clear is that a stereotypical opportunist thief does not exist. The majority arrested so far do not fit the "deprived/disaffected youth" pigeon hole. What is also clear is that Cllr Govindia has tried to gain poltical credit out of this situation as some voters lust for revenge. I would reckon there are many families who have not been evicted even though a member of that family may have been convicted of similar or worse crimes. |
