On this one point I do agree - the loss of apprenticeships and the insistence of continuing academic education past age 16 is not the right course for all children. Neither was the (Blair's?) idea that 50%+ students should go to university. However this doesn't mean that only children of wealthy parents should have the opportunity to go to uni. Just the brightest from whichever source. However if my two daughters were now at the age of going to uni I couldn't afford to help them financially at all and nor would I want them to leave with larger debts than current graduates. Sorry - went off course here but education is a key issue in breakdown of law and order imho. btw Ian I wonder how old the teachers were that you respected? Mine were certainly between 30 and 50 years old but nowadays many seem as if they are only in their 20s and 30s and barely older than some of the students they teach. It was also a known fact that if we misbehaved the teachers would let parents know and we would be disciplined at home as well as at school, but children can no longer be smacked even on the back of the leg without Childline and social services being involved. I am NOT advocating going back to the bad old days (I admit I was mostly scared stiff of misbehaving)but the pendulum has swung too far in the other direction. |
