I think some people have lost their moral compass. We know that politicians did (the expenses scandal). We know that the media did (Murdoch/News of the World etc). It seems that some Forum contributors have too. Young people tend to be acutely aware of adult hypocrisy. (David Starkey should stick to talking about buildings and relics.) What would be “uplifting” is if someone in power/government would announce that that the “polite” looters (merchant bankers’ et al) who have effectively impoverished the majority were brought to justice. They did not care about the consequences of their crimes did they? They have ruined the lives of multitudes long term and destroyed businesses too. There is no remorse among those criminals. They may not have committed arson or killed anyone (directly) but they are all responsible to some degree for the vacuum of our immoral society those young people are set to inherit. The hope of many for their future has been drastically curtailed. The morals that govern politicians at the highest levels are those of The City. Collusion between the powerful elite of this and other countries, governments, Moody’s, S&P, Fitch, Goldman Sachs, Merrill Lynch etc etc; they are the biggest criminals out there. The FBI knew in 2004 that 90% of what is now known as Sub-Prime mortgages were fraudulent. What did Bush do? What has Obama done? The ratings organisations knew that the packaged loans they classified as AAA were nothing of the sort. It was the lenders who were writing the lies into the loan applications and our institutions who bought them. Those lenders knew what they were doing; ultimately exporting USA debt to the rest of the world culminating in the 2008 economic collapse. Economic terrorism has ruled for more than a decade and continues to do so. What many young people are aware of is that those who perpetrated those frauds were effectively given immunity and even rewarded (e.g. Fred Goodwin). Where is the FSA report on the crash? Why has no one been jailed? Is the FSA report still being edited like an Iraq war document for public consumption? Now what is the moral difference between the white collar, “polite”, looters and those who went out looting last week? Is it that the full force of the law should only be brought down on the latter; benefits removed and made homeless? Is that what will happen for those who colluded in the enormous fraud that remains unpunished after more than 2 years. Are you not angry with the organised criminals and fraudsters known as bankers anymore? Shouldn’t their houses and the proceeds of their crimes (pension funds etc) be confiscated? Or should there be a law for one and a different law/justice for the other? Don’t judge lest you be judged – measure for measure. |
