Heather you should get your history right. The Ugandian Asians were expelled from Uganda in 1972 by military dictator Idi Amin who was becoming more and more power-crazed (some say mad). One reason he gave for his actions was that 'God told him to'. The Asians had originally come from Gujurat in India, had become powerful and respected business and professional people and, as such, were a threat to Amin. Uganda was and still is a Commonwealth country and so many had British passports and were free to come to Britain, having had to leave their property and money behind. Although they arrived with next to nothing their traditions of hard work stood them in good stead and most have done well here. Although I do not agree with Councillor Govindia myself over the eviction threat I do think it is wrong to misrepresent his background, Sue: As for David Starkey - stark raving ..........*** |
