Quite right Heather. Cllr Govindia has over stepped the mark with a knee jerk political response to a more complex problem that he evidently knows little if anything about. I know in some cultures there is the notion that the sins of the father can be passed to the son but from the son to the father? That's a new one! I appreciate that the police have a difficult job to do at times but their "stand off" approach during the first few days was appalling. Whatever commissioner Orde may say and the extenuating circumstances that existed at the time, when I saw video of police standing by watching while wanton crimes were being committed in front of them, within a matter of a few yards and in full view, my heart sank. In fact my immediate thought was "Are they waiting for a risk assessment before acting?". The attitude appeared to be the one foisted on victims of burglary when reporting the crime when one of the first question tends to be "Are you insured?" I may be over-cynical about this but I do know this is many people's experience. They will send someone round to counsel you but is that really what we want the police to be doing? Back to the issue in hand, I fail to see how evicting people will right the wrong. As has been said, punishment should be left to the courts and professionals who support the courts and not to politicians such as Cllr Govindia. |
