I think we do have to look at the sick society that has created an environment where greed, lying, gang culture and self enrichment at others expense is valorised. To say that the bankers have got off lightly is an understatement. The vast majority of those "gang leaders" still have their overpaid jobs and the gamblers under their control are still raking in (not creating) disproportionate wealth. When Cameron delivers a speech warning against "demonising" bankers and for Osbourne to suggest that cutting the 50% income tax rate is some sort of priority, I think that indicates just how far away from the reality of the majority of working people's experience the government is. Lest we forget, it was a Conservative government who switched our economy from production to "services" and indirectly created the sub-culture of the hard core unemployed where many but possibly not the majority of these miscreants come from. I am not advocating soft punishment for the looters but a society that places greater emphasis on disproportionate punishment of crimes committed by mainly stupid people rather than clever people is truly sick. With cuts now happening to funding of social programmes, the challenge for us all is how we are to contribute to being part of the solution. Contributors to the Forum are mainly well educated, well intentioned people. Some may already be involved and I do feel that mentoring would be a valuable contribution to resolving and changing the attitudes of those who have lost hope to a degree where they are willing to jeopardise their freedom. The Mayor among others has a programme:- http://www.london.gov.uk/get-involved/public/types-of-volunteering/mentoring |
