The question really should be how do we, the international community, stop Iran moving towards building a nuclear weapon.

The US and Israeli bombing campaign - and now the threatened blockade - won’t achieve that. That’s already clear. In fact the IDF’s relentless bombing of Gaza and Lebanon has failed to achieve the eradication, or even the neutralisation, of Hamas and Hezbollah. So how they hope to persuade a deeply entrenched - and at the same time deeply unpopular- Iranian regime by bombing alone is beyond me.

Flawed, as we all know, but with some limited successes, attempts at negotiation and containment are still the only viable option in my view. And result in far less bloodshed.

Netanyahu’s promise to defeat Israel’s enemies and enable the country to live in peace and security have utterly failed. It is Israel’s tragedy that his methods so far guarantee only that the country will remain surrounded by new generations of highly radicalised enemies. And have lost Israel many (indeed most) of its friends and supporters around the world.
