Not the least extraordinary part of the failed negotiations with Iran was Vance’s statement afterwards that “We’ve made it very clear what our redlines are, what we are willing to accommodate them on and what things we are not willing to accommodate them on. We’ve made that as clear as we possibly could, and they’ve chosen not to accept our terms.”

What this illustrates is his complete inability to understand that the other side has red lines too, and the art of negotiation is to find some way of trading off between the two sets, instead of fetching up and saying, in effect, “these are our red lines and you have to accept them or we’re off home.” And that illustrates perfectly the failure of the US team to include any trained, experienced diplomatic negotiators who would have that basic understanding the negotiating process, instead of which the ‘team’ consisted of blundering Vance and the Dopey Duo of Witless and the boy Kushner.
