In answer to Alan's comments:

1) The Putney Society (of which I'm a member but hold no position of responsibility or ability to speak for it) is an amenity society seeking "to promote "the preservation, development and improvement for the public benefit of the character and amenities of the Putney and Roehampton area" (see http://www.putneysociety.org.uk/society.html). Of course it's "unelected" -  so are you - but It's part of local civic society and has as much right to express views as any other person or body. Seeking to impose its views on the rest of us? What nonsense!

2) Where you live and whether the vast majority of motorists are careful and considerate drivers are unconnected. And would this "vast majority" of motorists include the vast majority who routinely and regularly exceed the speed limit on our roads? In any case, these limits are needed because of the minority of drivers who are not careful or considerate. If everyone behind the wheel behaved in a civilised manner there would be no need for any speed limit.

3) I don't know how many "accidents" (please don't refer to these as accidents, as the number of genuine accidents is minuscule: they are mostly caused by stupidity or carelessness on the part of those involved) but this is about rather more than stopping road casualties: it's about making our streets liveable in again, reclaiming them from the dominance the motor car.

4) Why should Wandsworth or anyone else refund you for damage to your car caused by your driving too fast over humps? There's a reason why they're called speed humps after all…..

5) As 3 above: this isn't just about saving lives.

6) I agree that pedestrians must apply the Green Cross code before they cross the road, that's not an issue; see also 3 and 5 above.

I hope for theses reasons you will change your mind on this question.
