Adam, I have a problem with "Honest John".  He is a car dealer by trade and a paid up member of the petrolhead lobby group the Association of British Drivers.

His list of criticisms of road humps does not therefore start from a neutral standpoint.  Also, as I said in an earlier post he is referring to the older designs which were closer to tank traps and can do real harm even at low speeds.  I am a driver too, from time to time, and I use roads the other side of West Hill where these humps are a real deterrent to even using the roads concerned.

The sinusoidal humps are very different - no abrupt chnages in surface, smoothed profiles.

Ideally we should not need humps at all.  But they do slow traffic down and that is the object of the exercise.  How otherwise are we going to get average speeds down on our roads?  In my ideal world, all residential roads have a 20 limit, drivers get conditioned to the lower limit and it becomes largely self-enforcing, like the 30 limits currently.

I absolutely refute any suggestion that I read the Daily Mail!  But maybe you weren't referring to me?
