I don't think chicanes are the answer either: firstly they tend to encourage the idiots to show off their "skills," and secondly they cna be very hazardous for cyclists: the ones along Putney Bridge Road are very frightening if drivers are aggressively overtaking, causing you to be pinched behind them. Going back to Alan Sherman's criticisms of speed humps (to the fourth of which, that the ones designed for wheel tracks to fit round them are more dangerous, I'd add the bigger problem that they just don't work: eg the ones in Dover House Road), there's a lot to agree with what he wrote, if only drivers could be educated to behave properly and keep below the speed limit. But until they do, speed humps are the least bad option.
