| The trouble with speed bumps is: 1) They can be noisy for local residents with the noise of the car bumping on and off the thinkg. Then there is the braking and acceleration noise from vehicles doing the classic (and pretty stupid) accelerate away and brake hard for the next speed bump to be about 2 seconds quicker. 2) They look damn ugly 3) They are expensive to put in, take out and make road repairs more expensive 4) if they are the ones designed for wheel tracks to fit around the bump then they can make a road more dangerous as cars try to position their wheels in the troughs. Examples of this are when cars go head to head as they try and do the same thing coming both ways, or when cars skim past parked vehicles too close (think if a pedestrian or animal is walking out from between these parked cars, or a passenger opens their door), and of course the disregard for cyclists when cars will squeeze a cyclists into teh edge of the road rather than drive their car over a bump. I'm all up for speed reductions, but would prefer enforcement rather than have these ugly, expensive, dangerous carbuncles thrust into our streets. |
