I really don't see what the objection to speed humps is. Far from being a sign of the "nanny state" of Guy's imagining, their purpose is to reduce the effect of road casualties and reclaim our streets for people not cars: as things are, would you let your children play in the streets in Putney with some of the speed-obsessed morons on the roads?

I don't know anything about Leonard's 'enlightened local authority in the north of England,' but a study in the BMJ (http://www.bmj.com/content/339/bmj.b4469.full) of the effect of introducing 20 mph zones on road casualties in London between 1998 and 2006 showed a reduction over 40 per cent in casualties. The paper concludes that "20 mph zones are effective measures for reducing road injuries and deaths."

And as for the worry about the " potentially damaging" effect of speed humps,  if you drive over them sensibly they are not damaging at all. The clue lies in their name, Leonard….

Still, what do a few more deaths and serious injuries matter, compared with drivers' freedom to go as fast as they like, eh?
