I don't think anyone would disagree that any sort of traffic control device has its disadvantages, speed bumps/humps/cushions/etc included. When the alternative is flagrant law-breaking activity that places the lives of pedestrians at risk though, there are some bitter pills that have to be swallowed, and of the available options, many experts have determined these to be some of the most effective. Out of curiosity, this evening I counted the cars that went past my house on Disraeli Rd whilst I did the washing up, over a 20 minute period (it was a bit overdue ;)). Given that traffic is heavier during rush hour, hence slower speeds, this should provide a low estimate - still, of the 35 cars I counted, 8 were clearly exceeding the speed limit, half of them at speeds I would consider dangerous. If there is an affordable, provably more effective method to bring people like this down to a safe, reasonable speed I will happily support that instead. Until then, based on the general body of research, speed cushions seem to be the best approach.
