When I am in Edinburgh I stay in a road with speed bumps and a 20 mph limit.  Yes, there are occasional idiots who try and get all four wheels off the ground at the same time but most people slow down and negotiate the thing with caution. It is one of the old fashioed ones which can do damage if attacked at too high a speed.  The sinusoidal ones are, as I said before, much smoother - no abrupt change of surface profile.  I am not sure I can point to any in Putney but here is a link to an article about them: http://www.dft.gov.uk/adobepdf/165240/244921/244924/TAL_9-98 Interestingly, the DfT version seems to be OK for buses and I think these raised surfaces look a better bet than the ineffective 'cushions' which the council is going for on the roads where the small single decker 424 travels.
