A lot of people do not realize that the impact of vehicles traversing speed cushions sends shock waves through the ground.  These shock waves can cause structural damage of buildings which is why official UK regulations exclude them anywhere within 25m of bridges, subways and tunnels.  I ask why residential homes are treated differently. Why do we have to endure our homes being damaged and our night sleep constantly interrupted to please a few nimbys?

The speed cushions we have on the Dover House Road do not slow down the majority of speeding vehicles.  They may well indeed slow down the Nissan micra and flash sports car but any vehicle bigger than these straddle the speed cushions and this is what causes the noise, shuddering, shaking and vibrations that damages our homes.

Jonathan, you are more than welcome to stay at my home for a full 24 hours to see what problems my neighbours and I endure.  I guarantee you will be shocked at the amount of shuddering shaking, vibration and noise you will encounter.  Oh, and by the way, if you venture out in to my garden do be aware of tiles slipping off the roof as this is another problem endured.

In regard to the new type of road humps you mention are these the same as the speed cushions we have on the Dover House Road?  And when you say speed humps do you mean the type that go right across the road and to which councils do not use on high usage roads because of the disruption they cause to larger vehicles such as buses, vans & lorries? Double standards or what?

I agree speeding motorist need a deterrent but don’t agree the answer is turning Wandsworth into the speed bump capital of the UK. Why not turn the whole of Wandsworth into a 20mph zone and ensure motorist who don’t abide are penalized.  Speed cameras would do the job at a fraction of the costs of installing and maintaining speed bumps/humps/cushions.
