| There is no reason to expect the 20 mph proposals to result in more noise or inconvenience. There are regular, almost all minor, accidents in West Putney, but that is not the only reason why lower speeds are better - the key point being accident prevention. I have posted here before about a near miss on Howards Lane when I was in a taxi. Someone stepped out without looking and we missed him by an inch - because we were only doing about 20. Any faster and he would have had a trip to hospital! Cameras can be installed but cost a lot more than humps. My preference would have been for signs which only come on when you exceed the limit and I don't think humps are needed on most of the local roads. The council's proposals should however still be supported because of the overwhelmingly convincing statistics showing much lower accident levels where speed limits are lower. Richard in an earlier post referred to a BMJ report which backed 20 mph limits. It will just as easy / difficult as before and I don't believe any spaces will be lost, certainly not on roads where on-street parking is difficult. |
