| Matt, we seem to have our wires crossed here as I've never mentioned cyclists. My posts have been about pedestrians crossing the road without looking appearing to assume that the onus is on the driver to somehow avoid them. You responded by saying "Of course the onus is on the driver. They have the 1000kg+ metal box and along with that comes the responsibility not to kill anyone with it." This is not an attitude to road safety that you want to be teaching your children. The onus is on drivers to exercise all care and courtesy when behind the wheel and drive at a speed suitable to the conditions whilst observing the speed limit. The onus is on the pedestrian to exercise all care and courtesy when crossing the highway and be mindful of the fact that drivers will not necessarily have sufficient reaction time/breaking distance in the event a pedestrian steps off the kerb into their path. But there are too many pedestrians who seem to feel that their safety is the responsibility of everybody except their own...it's the nanny state culture attitude! "It's his fault! He just stepped out in front of me!" Well if he did, then yes it is his fault. |
