Jonathan, I would not presume to pigeonhole you as a member of any group but I think it’s fair to categorise a particular view as part of a certain mindset. In this case it is the view that ideals such as independence, sovereignty and the freedom to make our own laws, which Brexiteers often cited as their reason for wishing to leave the EU, are stupid if not xenophobic. The mindset from which this view comes sees nationalist sentiment in Britain (though not necessarily in other nations) as disreputable, associating it with the kind of people who fly St George’s flags from their white vans. It is termed ‘metropolitan’ as a shorthand  because it is associated with the left leaning intelligentsia of London, but it is not widely shared outside of London.

Given the economic difficulties in which the country now finds itself it is not surprising that many people are grasping for solutions, including the idea of rejoining the EU. But is Brexit responsible for the economic mess and would rejoining the EU (or parts of the EU structure) be the answer? I am not convinced. I don’t believe that the difficulties which firms have experienced in exporting to Europe is the main problem. The main problem is the size of the welfare budget, which has resulted in higher taxes, which in turn slow growth.
