| 8n an earlier post, Ivonne, Jonathan sugested that nationalist concepts such as independence, sovereignty and the freedom to make our own laws, which Brexiteers cited as reasons for leaving the EU, were 'intangible, implying that they were at best meaningless. He contrasted these with the 'tangible' economic benefits of remaining in the EU. My point is that progressives would never dream of disparaging nationalist sentiment in other nations such as the Ukrainians and the Palestinians. This contradiction lies at the heart of why Labour has lost support among working class communities outside London. Many working class people are patriotic and they resent the way in which metropolitan progressives regard their patriotism as xenophobic. |
