Airplane noise has got worse due to the dramatic increase in the number of flights, so much so that Heathrow is now operating at 99% capacity and planes arrive at a frequency of one every 90 seconds. Although engines are now quieter, the increased frequency means that by the time one has passed another arrives resulting in almost constant noise. BAA are also concerned and it is for this reason that they want to abandon runway alteration. You may have read that an experiment is to begin on the 1st November to operate both runways for simultaneous landing. For those of us living in Putney this is bad news. For two reasons :- 1) we will not have the respite period when the northern runway is in operation, but more importantly, 2) simultaneous use of both runways for landing requires that planes maintain a safe distance from one another when they approach the airport. The safe distance is both horizontal and vertical, and with regard to the latter this means that one plane must fly lower than the other. And guess which planes will do this - yes, those which land on the southern runway having flown over Putney. The upshot is no more quiet periods for half a day, and louder aircraft noise due to a lower approach path over Putney involving the use of the engine to maintain height (which at present planes are not suppose to do). BAA have not mentioned this in any of their press releases. Hopefully this can be discussed at the meeting to be held at the Brewer Building on the 23rd of November. |
