Having lived in Putney since the end of the 1970s I think there is a need to get some balance of the pros and cons in this discussion. I decided to live here (after living in a number of other areas in London during the previous 10 years and travelling to friends in a number of areas including Putney) as: 1. there were two tube stations, a rail station and numerous bus services providing good options for commuting into central London - even with both train and tubes systems disabled during the past two weekend getting to the West End by bus and train via Clapham Junction has been relatively easy. 2.proximity to Heathrow and Gatwick makes business travel convenient. 3.the A3 now provides a means to access the motorway network and has always been a means of escape into the countryside of Sussex and Hampshire. 4. Wimbledon Common, Richmond Park and, more recently, the Wetlands Centre plus other, smaller, parks are within walking distance. 5. the river Thames is close by for walks and boat trips, and the new Wandle walk is also within walking distance. 6. shopping facilities are reasonable (at least opening hours are sensible for those of us that work) although perhaps not as good/varied as they once were - but I suspect that's a national trend with the coming of "mega shopping malls". 7. there's a reasonable selection of restaurants. True nothing that remarkable (certainly for vegetarians/vegans) and I'd say pubs aren't too good these days (but perhaps that's old age setting in) and it's sad the Youngs brewery has left Wandsworth. Personally, I'd say having selected to live in Putney for the transport facilities it would be hypocritical for me to complain too much about aircraft or other transport noise - and personally I haven't noticed it getting that much worse in East Putney - perhaps that another function of hearing loss as time passes! (Sorry to see Concorde go though.) |
