I am certain there will be a lot more noise in the Commons, the London Mayor's office and the press over this issue than is currently disturbing the skies above Putney. Our MP made her name and established herself by, let's be honest, taking a NIMBYesque position on Heathrow. Now she will have to take a national interest perspective on air travel in London and it will be revealing to watch how firmly she sticks to her guns. (She has already reneged on her pre-election promise that there would be no re-organisation of the NHS). However, surely no one believes the air traffic status quo can be maintained - except perhaps Zac Goldsmith even though I am sure his billionaire lifestyle must include more air travel than most of us take. Householders somewhere will suffer from another runway at Heathrow, or one at Gatwick, or this magic-sounding underground train twixt Heathrow and Gatwick or Boris' floating Thames airport with TWO fast railways to London. No one can really believe this country can afford or this Government would show any enthusiasm for the last two ventures. So to keep the wheels of the economy going and satisfy business lobbies, a bigger Heathrow or Gatwick is inevitable as is more aircraft noise. So we had better get used to it. |
