| The House of Commons Library has published road accident statistics for every constituency from 2020 to 2025. 2020 is the last year when the 20 mph limit was still confined to residential streets in Wandsworth. The Council extended the new limit to all roads from 2021 to 2023. Here are the data for the Putney constituency: Year: Casualties: Total Fatal Serious. Slight 2020 303. 0. 39. 264 2021. 328. 0. 51. 277 2022. 369. 1. 68. 300 2023. 308. 0. 43. 265 2024. 240. 2. 46. 192 2025. 283. 2. 52. 229 Supporters of the Council’s decision to extend the 20 mph speed limit to all roads in the borough claim that it has reduced the number of fatalities and serious accidents. Yet the figures for Putney suggest that the extension has made virtually no difference. If anything, the number of accidents slightly increased following the Council’s decision in 2020 and has varied little since then. Surely a targeted approach, where reduced limits are imposed in streets where there are schools and in accident hotspots (which used to be the case), would be more sensible. |
