Hi Jane
Nice to see your return to Putney Forum. Compared  to psycho killer   I don’t think that a general remark about anti-car zealots with time on their hands is particularly offensive, no more offensive than Jonathan’s comment that opponents of the blanket speeding limit are  right wing people who think they should be allowed to do what they like. I am sure that Jonathan is no more upset about my words than I am about his.

As to the speed limit itself, I perfectly understand the need to protect the vulnerable, particularly children, on residential streets. My objections are

1) the lack of public consultation - I don’t think that the support of 1995 residents out of a population of 337 655 constitutes a majority decision

2) a blanket rather than a selective 20 mph limit

3) the practice of fining drivers for minor infractions of the limit.

Jonathan argues that it was a Tory administration which brought in the speed limit. I don’t see the relevance of this point. Why bring politics into it? The fact is that the Putney Society originally campaigned for a reduced speed limit on residential roads. The Council, following an absurd public consultation in which only 1% of residents expressed a view either way, then extended the limit to all roads in the borough, apparently with the support of Putney Society. Recently the Council has petitioned TFL to extend the limit to arterial roads in the borough such  as the A3. Does that have public support?
