| The whole saga of the 20 mph limit in Wandsworth perfectly demonstrates how a small minority can tyrannise over the majority in a democracy. It begins when a group of anti-car zealots with time on their hands canvass local councillors. The council then pretends to engage in a public consultation exercise by uploading a poorly advertised online survey to which around 1% of residents respond. When 59% of the tiny number of respondents vote in favour, the council concludes that the new speed limit enjoys majority support and the 20 mph signs go up everywhere in the borough. Reasonable objections to the blanket limit are then dismissed by a series of arguments ranging from disingenuous to just plain rude, as this thread aptly demonstrates. |
