The mistake Steven and others make is to regard 20mph as a target, when it isn't, it's a limit.  Which means that it is perfectly in order to aim to drive at around 18mph so that you have a little spare in hand, so to speak. And at first it might seem strange, keeping below 20mph when you're used to driving at 30mph or more, but in fact you very soon get used to the lower speed.

Just remember that it's about the safety of other road users, especially the more vulnerable ones. And please drop this absurd notion, one of the great myths of motoring, that to keep within 20mph you have to drive whilst keeping your eyes glued to the speedometer. It's ridiculous, as no one says that about 30mph, 40mph or any other speed limit. It's a crackpot idea that doesn’t survive a moment's rational thought.
